Buyer Guide: Used Zeekr 001 for Saudi Arabia (Dammam & Jeddah)
We are writing this as a practical, no-nonsense guide for Saudi importers considering the Zeekr 001 from China. This is not a sales pitch. We have handled dozens of EV exports to KSA, and we want you to understand exactly what you are getting into—costs, risks, and logistics—before you commit.
1. Why the Zeekr 001 in Saudi Arabia?
The Zeekr 001 is positioned as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model S, but at a significantly lower used price. In KSA, the premium EV market is dominated by Tesla and Lucid. The Zeekr 001 offers comparable luxury, performance, and a longer range on certain variants. The 2023-2024 "You" and "We" editions with the 140 kWh CATL Qilin battery claim a CLTC range of 1,032 km. Real-world highway driving in KSA (with A/C at 40°C) will reduce that to roughly 750-850 km, but that still beats any Tesla Model S on the market. For a buyer in Dammam or Jeddah, that means fewer charging stops on the Riyadh-Dammam or Jeddah-Mecca routes.
Key specs to look for: 544 hp dual-motor AWD, 0-100 km/h in 3.8 seconds (flagship), air suspension, and a 15.4-inch screen. The 2022 models had some early software bugs—stick to 2023 onward if possible. We do not recommend the 2022 base model (86 kWh) for KSA; range is too tight for highway use.
2. Port Choice: Dammam vs. Jeddah
This is not a trivial decision. Dammam (King Abdulaziz Port) serves the Eastern Province and Riyadh. Jeddah (Islamic Port) serves the Western region and Mecca. Here is our practical take:
- Dammam: Faster customs clearance for EVs if you have the correct paperwork. Port congestion is lower than Jeddah. If your end customer is in Riyadh or the Eastern Province, use Dammam. Trucking from Dammam to Riyadh costs roughly SAR 1,200-1,500 (USD 320-400) for a 40-foot container. Transit time from Shanghai to Dammam is 18-22 days.
- Jeddah: Higher volume of vehicles, but also more random inspections. Customs in Jeddah is stricter on EV battery documentation. If your buyer is in Mecca or Jeddah itself, it makes sense. Transit time from Shanghai to Jeddah is 20-25 days. Trucking from Jeddah to Mecca is minimal (SAR 300-500).
We recommend Dammam for most first-time importers. The customs officers there are more familiar with EVs from China, and the process is slightly more predictable. Jeddah can be a headache if your SASO certificate has any discrepancy.
3. SASO Conformity Certificate – The Non-Negotiable
You cannot clear any vehicle through Saudi customs without a SASO (Saudi Standards, Metrology and Quality Organization) Certificate of Conformity. For used EVs, this must be obtained before shipping. We use Bureau Veritas in Shanghai for this. Here are the real numbers:
- Cost: USD 280-400 per vehicle, depending on the model year and whether you need expedited service.
- Timeline: 7-10 business days, assuming the vehicle has no modifications or damage. Add 3-5 days if you need to correct paperwork.
- What happens without it: Your container will be held at the port. You will be fined SAR 500-1,000 per day of storage (after the free period of 5 days). The vehicle will not be cleared, and you may be forced to re-export it at your own cost. We have seen this happen. Do not skip this step.
The certificate covers safety, emissions (even for EVs, they check for battery leakage risk), and roadworthiness. Bureau Veritas will inspect the vehicle in Shanghai. We handle this for our clients, but you can also do it yourself if you have a local agent.
4. Hot-Weather Preparation – Do This Before Shipping
KSA summer temperatures exceed 50°C in July and August. The Zeekr 001 was designed for China's moderate climate. You must do the following before the vehicle leaves China:
- Coolant flush: Replace the factory coolant with a high-temperature variant (e.g., G13 or equivalent). The factory coolant is rated for -35°C to +120°C, but the pump and seals can degrade faster in extreme heat. Cost: USD 80-120.
- A/C pressure test: The Zeekr 001's A/C system uses R1234yf refrigerant. Test the high-side pressure at 45°C ambient. If it exceeds 25 bar, you may need a condenser upgrade. Many 2022 models had weak condensers. Cost of test: USD 30-50.
- Battery thermal management check: The Zeekr 001 has liquid cooling for the battery. In Chinese markets, the system is tuned for 35-40°C max. In KSA, the battery can reach 50°C+ during fast charging. Ask your supplier to verify the coolant level and pump function. If the battery management system (BMS) logs any overtemperature warnings, replace the coolant pump (USD 200-300).
We cannot stress this enough: A failed battery thermal system in Jeddah summer can lead to reduced range (50% loss) or, in extreme cases, a thermal event. We have seen two Zeekr 001s in Dubai with battery issues after 6 months. Prevention is cheap.
5. LHD Requirement – No Exceptions
Saudi Arabia requires all vehicles to be left-hand drive (LHD). The Zeekr 001 is only manufactured in LHD, so this is not an issue for this model. However, we mention it because some Chinese EV makers (like NIO) have RHD versions for Hong Kong or Macau. Zeekr 001 is 100% LHD. Verify the VIN plate before purchase. If you see "RHD" anywhere, do not buy it.
6. Realistic 2026 Pricing for Used Zeekr 001
We are writing this in early 2026. Here are the current market prices for used Zeekr 001 from Chinese auctions and direct suppliers, in USD (CIF Shanghai):
- 2022 Zeekr 001 (86 kWh, base): USD 28,000-32,000. High mileage (30,000-50,000 km). We do not recommend for KSA.
- 2023 Zeekr 001 (100 kWh, "We" edition): USD 35,000-40,000. Good condition, 20,000-40,000 km. This is the sweet spot for value.
- 2024 Zeekr 001 (140 kWh, "You" edition): USD 45,000-52,000. Low mileage (under 20,000 km). Premium option with longest range.
Add USD 2,500-3,000 for shipping, insurance, and SASO certificate to Dammam. Total landed cost (before Saudi duties) will be USD 37,500-55,000 depending on variant.
7. UN3480 EV Shipping Rules
The Zeekr 001's battery is classified as UN3480 (Lithium-ion batteries). Shipping requires:
- Battery state of charge (SoC) between 30% and 50% at time of loading.
- Vehicle must be in a container with proper ventilation (or a flat rack).
- Dangerous goods declaration (DGD) from the shipping line. Cost: USD 150-250 per container.
- No damage to the battery casing. Any dent or crack will result in rejection.
We use COSCO or MSC for EV shipments. They have specific EV booking procedures. Do not use a general cargo booking; the container will be flagged and delayed.
8. Saudi Import Duty and VAT – The Reality Check
Here is the exact calculation for a 2023 Zeekr 001 valued at USD 38,000 CIF Dammam:
- Customs duty: 5% of CIF value = USD 1,900.
- VAT: 15% of (CIF value + duty) = 15% of USD 39,900 = USD 5,985.
- Total taxes: USD 7,885.
- Landed cost (before local fees): USD 38,000 + 7,885 = USD 45,885.
Add port handling (SAR 1,000-1,500, or USD 267-400) and customs broker fee (SAR 1,000-2,000, or USD 267-533). Your total all-in cost is roughly USD 46,500-47,000. Selling price in KSA for a 2023 Zeekr 001? Expect SAR 160,000-180,000 (USD 42,667-48,000) retail. Margins are tight—you need volume or lower buy-in prices.
9. Payment: T/T in USD or CNY-SAR Direct
We accept T/T in USD to our Hong Kong account or CNY-SAR direct via SWIFT. CNY-SAR can save you 1-2% on forex conversion if your bank offers competitive rates. For USD T/T, we use HSBC. Minimum order is 1 unit. Payment schedule: 30% deposit, 70% upon loading at Shanghai port. We have been doing this for 4 years. No escrow, no PayPal. If you need references, we can provide them.
Final Word
The Zeekr 001 is a strong choice for KSA, but only if you handle the hot-weather prep and SASO certificate correctly. The margins are not huge at current used prices, but demand is growing. We expect 2026 to see more Zeekr 001s on Saudi roads as charging infrastructure improves.
