Two charges, both 5%. Customs duty is 5% of CIF under the GCC Common External Tariff, then VAT is 5% on the sum of CIF plus duty — so roughly 10% of CIF in total, one of the lowest combined stacks in the GCC. On a $16,000 CIF vehicle that is about $800 duty plus $840 VAT.
How old can a used car be for Oman?
Private vehicles (sedans and 4x4s) must be under 7 years from date of manufacture, trucks and buses under 10 years, and equipment under 15 years — per Royal Oman Police and Directorate General of Traffic rules effective 1 July 2025. Classic vehicles over 30 years may be imported with General Traffic Department approval. Older guides citing a 10-year limit are out of date.
What certification is needed to register a used car in Oman?
A GCC/GSO Certificate of Conformity (OS GSO 48:1984 certificates of conformity against OS GSO 42:2015 general requirements), ratified by Oman's Directorate General of Standards and Metrology, plus a mandatory Fahas technical inspection before ROP registration. The conformity-assessment procedure now covers both new and used, petrol, electric and hybrid passenger vehicles.
Which port should I use for Oman — Sohar or Salalah?
Sohar for Muscat and the northern Batinah region: it is 135 km from Muscat, has better sailing frequency and customs infrastructure, and clears in about a week. Salalah serves the southern Dhofar region but congests between November and December. Sultan Qaboos Port in Muscat is largely cruise and smaller traffic.
