Land Rover isn't the Tanzania volume leader (that goes to Toyota), but our buyers from Tanzania often pair a Land Rover unit alongside a mainstream pick — the market skew is a Toyota-dominated used-import fleet where the Finance Act 2026 replaced a hard age ban with a steeper age-banded excise, so older units now cost materially more to clear. In our current yard the moving Land Rover models are Range Rover, Discovery Sport, Discovery, weighted toward suv bodies, model years 2012-2025, averaging around $74k pre-shipping. The Tanzania sweet spot for this brand tends to land inside $14k-$26k CIF, once TBS PVoC (e-COC only) and duty are stacked on.
Land Rover in our stock is predominantly ICE (petrol/diesel), which for Tanzania still commands the practical daily-use case — coastal humidity at Dar es Salaam plus unpaved upcountry roads — we check underbody corrosion and A/C performance before B/L and record both in the pre-export PDF. Can I ship a left-hand-drive car to Tanzania?
No — and this is the first thing to settle before anything else. Tanzania drives on the left and the importation of left-hand-drive vehicles is prohibited; an LHD car cannot be cleared or registered. Our Shanghai yard is China-domestic stock, so it is left-hand drive throughout, and we cannot supply Tanzania from it. We would rather say that at the start than take a deposit on a car that can never be plated. If you need RHD, tell us the model and we will tell you honestly whether we can source it — we will not pretend the yard has something it does not.
What is the import duty on a used car into Tanzania?
25% import duty (the EAC Common External Tariff) plus 18% VAT, and then excise on top — banded both by engine capacity and by vehicle age. From 1 July 2026 the Finance Act 2026 (Act No. 2 of 2026) sets an age surcharge of 18% for vehicles over 8 and up to 10 years, 35% for over 10 and up to 20 years, and 40% for over 20 years; vehicles up to 8 years old pay no age surcharge at all. Published guides disagree on the exact excise bands by engine capacity, so we confirm the cc band for your specific unit with a Tanzanian clearing agent before you commit rather than quoting a number we cannot stand behind.
What certification does a used car need for Tanzania?
A TBS Pre-Export Verification of Conformity (PVoC) Certificate of Conformity, issued before shipment by a TBS-appointed agent. Since 1 November 2025 only electronic CoCs are accepted — paper certificates are no longer valid. Shipping without one exposes you to a penalty of up to 15% of CIF plus inspection on arrival, which is a worse outcome than the certificate costs.
Is there an age limit for used car imports into Tanzania?
There is no outright age ban. Some import guides still publish an 8-year or 10-year cap, but the weight of the evidence — the Finance Act 2026 and TRA-aligned guidance — is that Tanzania taxes age rather than banning it, through the age-banded excise above. Age is counted from the date of manufacture, so a unit can cross into a higher band during the 28-40 day transit; we check the band against the manufacture date before quoting, not after the car has sailed.
