Chinese Pickup Category is Coming of Age
Five years ago exporting a Chinese pickup outside the domestic market was a hard sell — buyers wanted a Hilux or Ranger. That has changed. The Great Wall Poer platform (also badged Cannon in export markets) has passed 100,000 exports cumulatively. JAC and Foton have caught up on build quality. This piece is a plain comparison for import buyers deciding which platform to stock in 2026.
Great Wall Poer / Cannon — the Volume Choice
Body-on-frame, coil-spring rear suspension (unusual in this segment), 2.0T petrol or 2.0T diesel. Diesel is the export favorite in Africa/Middle East, petrol dominates Russia/CIS. Cabin is genuinely modern (10.25" touchscreen, actual air-con that works at 45°C). Payload 1050 kg, tow 3200 kg braked. Parts network in Africa is 3-4x better than Foton or JAC because of Great Wall's decade-long export focus. Typical FOB Shanghai USD 17,000-21,500 for 2023 used unit with 30,000-60,000 km.
JAC T9 (Hunter/T-Series) — Best Value Diesel
2.0T Cummins-collaboration diesel, ZF 8-speed automatic — this combination is why fleet buyers keep asking for T9 quotes. Interior is more utilitarian than Poer but chassis strength is arguably better for real work loads. Payload 1200 kg. The trade-off: JAC dealer network in destination countries is thin. If your buyer will do warranty repairs through independent workshops it's a great choice; if they need brand-authorized service it can be a problem. Typical FOB USD 15,500-19,500 for a 2023 used unit.
Foton Tunland G7 / G9 — Fleet & Government
Foton has strong government-fleet and mining-fleet penetration in Central Asia and Africa, so used G7/G9 units are often ex-fleet (well-maintained but higher mileage). The 2.0T Cummins diesel is proven. Cabin is behind Great Wall on comfort but ahead on visibility and cargo access. Best for buyers who move goods, not people. Typical FOB USD 14,500-18,000 for 2022-2023 units 60,000-100,000 km.
Compliance & Destination Notes
- Russia — LHD, EAEU E-Mark required; utilization fee for pickups is meaningful, budget USD 3,500-6,000 depending on displacement.
- UAE / Saudi / Iraq — GCC CoC required (LHD only). All three brands have GCC-spec variants; confirm on your specific VIN.
- Kenya / Uganda — RHD variants exist for Poer only reliably; JAC and Foton export-market RHD is limited and case-by-case.
- Egypt — 1-year restriction still applies for diesel; check EV-pickup pilot programs for exception routes.
