For buyers in Russia, Central Asia and North Africa who face patchy fast-charging networks, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) is quietly becoming the smart middle ground — full EV torque and city running, plus a real gasoline engine that lets you cross 800 km without planning charge stops. The three models you will see most on the export line today are the BYD Song Plus DM-i, the Geely Galaxy Series (EM-i platform), and the Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV. Below is what we actually see on our loading yard, not spec-sheet marketing.

BYD Song Plus DM-i — Highest Volume, Cheapest Consumables

The 5th-generation DM-i drivetrain pairs a 1.5L Atkinson-cycle engine (efficiency-tuned, not sporty) with a 18.3 kWh LFP Blade battery. Claimed 110 km pure-electric range under CLTC (real-world roughly 75-85 km), combined range around 1,200 km. What matters for export: LFP chemistry handles hot Middle East and cold CIS conditions better than NCM. BYD parts and service coverage is the widest of the three across our destination countries. Typical FOB Shanghai USD 16,500-19,000 for a 2023-2024 used unit with 20,000-40,000 km.

Geely Galaxy L7 / EM-i — Best Ride Comfort

Geely’s EM-i (dedicated hybrid) system uses a 3-DHT gearbox that most buyers report feels smoother than DM-i in stop-and-go traffic. Battery 18.7 kWh NCM, so slightly better winter energy density but stricter storage/shipping thresholds. Pure EV around 115 km CLTC. Interior fit-and-finish is the best of the three — closer to what a UAE or Kazakh buyer expects from a mid-range family SUV. Typical FOB Shanghai USD 17,500-20,500 for a lightly-used 2023 unit.

Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV / Kunlun — Space & Off-Road Bias

The largest of the three externally (4.72 m length, 7-seat option in some trims). Chery’s Kunlun hybrid uses a 1.5T + dual-motor setup, so peak power is meaningfully higher (~325 kW combined vs BYD/Geely ~230 kW). Longer wheelbase gives real 3-row usability, which BYD Song Plus and Geely L7 don’t. Downside: fewer units on the used market for 2023-24 model years, so lead time can push 30-45 days on custom-source. Typical FOB USD 18,000-21,000.

  • Russia / CIS — BYD Song Plus DM-i wins on cold-weather reliability (LFP) and utilization-fee treatment as a hybrid. Preferred for Vladivostok RoRo route.
  • UAE / Saudi — Geely Galaxy for private buyers wanting comfort; Song Plus for fleet/rideshare economics.
  • Ethiopia / Kazakhstan — Chery Tiggo 8 PHEV if the buyer needs 7 seats or off-road ground clearance.
