EV shipping

Chinese EVs ship underUN3480 dangerous goods.

Lithium-ion battery vehicles are classified as UN3480 / UN3481 under the IMDG Code. Most container carriers require:

  • State of Charge 30–60% — not full, not empty. We charge to ~50% before lashing.
  • Lithium Battery Declaration — we file with carrier 7 days before vessel.
  • Battery health screenshot — SoH from BYD / Zeekr / NIO / XPeng official app, shared on B/L.
  • Container preferred over RoRo — only Hoegh, NYK and select carriers accept EV on RoRo decks.
  • Charging port adapter included — GB/T 2015 plug typed; we ship Type 2 or CCS2 adapter per destination market.
UN3480
Lithium battery, vehicle

Most Chinese EVs (BYD Blade, CATL LFP, NCM ternary) ship under this classification. Pure EV with installed battery pack.

UN3481
Battery packed with equipment

Used for spare battery + standalone shipments. Less common in dealer wholesale flow.

Avoid the rookie mistakes

Ten ways to lose money. All preventable.

01

Pay full balance against scanned B/L

Original B/L is what releases cargo. Scan-released cargo is a fraud vector.

02

Skip pre-shipment inspection

Saves USD 80 today, costs USD 5,000 when paint defects surface at port.

03

Buy a car older than destination age limit

Egypt 3yr, Algeria 3yr, Kenya 8yr. Check BEFORE deposit.

04

No customs broker pre-arranged

Container demurrage runs USD 150/day from day 8 onwards.

05

Wrong shipping mode for EV

Most RoRo carriers reject lithium EVs. Default to container.

06

Under-declare FOB value

Mismatch with insurance value voids policy + triggers customs audit.

07

Forget Lithium Battery Declaration

Carriers reject EV booking at last minute. We file 7 days ahead.

08

No SoH battery screenshot before deposit

Used Chinese EV can be 75–85% SoH. Demand BYD/Zeekr/NIO app screenshot.

09

Wrong-drive vehicle

Kenya/SA/UK = RHD only. Algeria/Egypt = LHD only. Confirm before shipping.

10

Single-car 40HQ container

Wastes USD 1,000+. Either consolidate or use 20HQ.

Shipping FAQ

Common questions,honest answers.

01What is the difference between RoRo and Container shipping?
RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) drives the vehicle directly onto a specialised car carrier vessel — cheapest and fastest for running, complete vehicles. Container shipping (20HQ holds 1 car, 40HQ holds 2 cars) costs more but protects against weather, theft, and accepts non-running cars, EVs, parts and accessories.
02Which mode is cheapest for one used car?
RoRo Shanghai → most ports under USD 1,200 for a sedan. Container 20HQ runs USD 1,800–2,400 for the same lane. Containers become cost-competitive when you ship 2 cars together in a 40HQ.
03How long does shipping from China take?
Typical transit times: Vladivostok 5–10 days, Dubai (Jebel Ali) 28–32 days, Mombasa 30–38 days, Durban 35–42 days, Lagos 40–52 days, Novorossiysk via Suez 45–55 days, Khorgos (land) 7–14 days to Almaty.
04Do you ship Chinese EVs internationally?
Yes — but lithium-battery vehicles ship under UN3480/UN3481 dangerous-goods rules. Battery must be charged to 30–60% SoC. We file the Lithium Battery Declaration and arrange DG-approved RoRo or container loading.
05What customs documents do I need at destination?
Standard package: Bill of Lading, Commercial Invoice, Packing List, Certificate of Origin (Form A or CO), Pre-shipment Inspection Certificate. Most markets add a local conformity certificate (SBKTS / GCC CoC / KEBS PVoC / SONCAP / GOEIC).
06Can I track my shipment?
Yes. Once loaded we share the vessel name + voyage number + B/L number. You can track on the carrier site (COSCO, MSC, Evergreen, Hoegh, NYK) or vesseltracker.com / marinetraffic.com.
07What is 110% CIF marine insurance?
Insurance value = CIF (Cost+Insurance+Freight) × 110%. The extra 10% covers a notional profit margin and import duty buffer, so a total loss compensates more than just the car cost. Premium runs 0.4–0.7% of insured value.
08What happens if the vehicle is damaged on the ship?
Pre-shipment inspection certificate proves zero-damage at load. Photograph the unit again at destination port before signing the Equipment Interchange Receipt. File a claim with the carrier within 3 days; marine insurance covers anything the carrier disputes.
